Finally complete after years of construction, 138 Bowery is ready for the big-time, and with an identity to boot.

Backed by WeWork founder Adam Neumann, Selina is a multipurpose hospitality endeavor that marries co-working options with hotel rooms, retail, and food offerings.

The lodge features 90 keys designed in collaboration with local artists and designers, a 6,000 square-foot outdoor terrace and a 6,000-square-foot rooftop bar, plus a 3,000 square-foot retail space on the Bowery.

The Bowery property will reportedly become a flagship for the international brand, which currently boasts dozens of locations globally.

The Selina building was developed by Emmut Properties, which shelled out $45.25 million in October 2015 for the long-vacant stretch of former lighting stores comprising 134-142 Bowery. It effectively erased more than two hundred years of invaluable area history. Indeed, number 140 dated back to the 1790s and was originally owned by men associated with the butchering trade. It was later a shoe store and millinery (“Callahan the Hatter”), among other functions. As a testament to its perseverence, the architecture persevered for more than two centuries; until 2011, when the owner lopped off the trademark dormers to nullify any possibility of landmarking.

Now the block between Delancey and Grand Streets is a new hotel row for the Bowery. Indeed, Marriott’s proposed Moxy hotel will eventually rise just across the street (another Emmut Properties development); CitizenM just debuted up the block; and the Sohotel continues its legacy a few steps away.
