New DC hotel geared toward activists and artists will have a selective coworking space

A special committee will vet and choose Eaton House members

Eaton DC, the forthcoming K Street hotel from Hong Kong real estate scion Katherine Lo designed to cater to the creative class, will officially open at the end of September. Shortly after that, on Oct. 1, another piece of the project is set to début: a members-only coworking space called Eaton House.

But it will be different from other coworking spaces in the area, according to Lo’s company, Eaton Workshop. Members will be vetted and chosen by a special selection committee on a rolling basis.

Lo says the coworking space will be a place for “socially conscious leaders” who work in “environmentalism, design, tech, nonprofits, activism, and the arts.” “Eaton House will encourage grassroots projects and artistic expression, and gather together a tribe of dreamers and doers to foster solutions towards a more utopian society,” she explains.

The hotel and the coworking space will be centrally located at 1201 K St. NW, in the former Sheraton Four Points hotel. Eaton Workshop also plans to open projects in Hong Kong, San Francisco, and Seattle. (Guest rooms at the D.C. hotel start at $199 a night.)

Once selected, members of the D.C. coworking space will have access to those at the company’s other locations as well as the hospitality offerings at each hotel: among them, screening and artist rooms, wellness programs, and in-house radio stations. Members will also get “preferred rates and pricing for guest rooms” and restaurants at the Eaton hotels.

Perks of membership include professional art tools like large-format printers and editing software, plus a range of events, the company says. At the Hong Kong location, which is currently in its soft-opening phase, members have attended #MeToo discussions, movie screenings, book readings, events for experimental dance and underground music, and meetings focused on the experiences of LGBTQ people and migrants.

At the D.C. coworking space, membership rates start at $400 a month for drop-in access, increasing to $800 a month for a dedicated desk, and $1,800 and up for office space. The rates, per Eaton Workshop, follow below.

  • “Nomad”—$400 a month
  • “Pioneer”—$800 a month
  • “Collective”—$1,800 a month for a two-person office, $3,000 a month for a four-person office, $4,500 a month for a six-person office

The amenities that will be accessible to members include a 50-seat professional screening room, a “Creator’s Room” filled with art tools, a café/espresso bar, four private conference rooms, and priority RSVP privileges to events at Eaton DC.
